Getting Started

Whether you've decided that you want to join, or you're just interested in learning more, at this point you probably want to know exactly how one would go about getting involved with Legends. You're in the right place. This page aims at being a central resource and checklist for people just getting started with Legends.

A good way to start is to get a feel for the world of Areth, where Legends takes place. There are many different settings where LARPs take place, and it is worthwhile to find out if the world of Areth is the sort you're looking for. Check out this story written by a Legends player about some new characters arriving in the settlement of New Galen. You might also want to browse through some more of our stories at this time.

Once you've decided you're excited about becoming a part of Areth, you might want to check our our list of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ). Don't worry if you don't understand everything; a lot of the things you're reading about will make more sense later, and if you still don't understand something, you can always ask a more experienced player or staff member for help.

One particular term from the FAQ list should be mentioned now: Logistics. During events, Logistics refers to an area where issues `about' the event are handled. Similarly, on this website, Logistics refers to information and things `about' game events, such as the schedule of upcoming events, directions to and weather at event sites, and details about what you'll want to bring to an event.

To really get involved with Legends, you need to create a character -- the persona that you'll adopt for Legends Events. Before you actually begin making your character, you should first read the Legends Rules, especially the Rulebook (pdf). The Rulebook contains detailed explanations of just about everything you need to know about playing Legends. It also has more information about the world of Areth, including details about the lands and races to be found there.

So if you think you'd like to come join us, the next step is to create a character. Here's what you should do:

  1. Enter yourself into our database. This creates a record for you as a player. Soon you'll also create a character, but you need to do this first.
  2. Mentally create a character you would like to play. Are you the half-elven warrior with the nasty-looking mace or the fellow hiding in the trees waiting for some witless passerby to stumble into your ambush? Perhaps you are a pacifist seeker of arcane knowledge? There is no shortage of the unknown to be discovered at Legends, and there is no limit to the types of person you can choose to play. Just be sure to remember you'll be taking on the role of this person for the entire weekend (or more), and you may need to interact with others as well.
  3. Don't forget to create a character history. It gives you a background and gives you something on which to base your character, but it also gives the Legends staff something to work with when making plots that might involve you directly. For example, suppose you write something like: "I stole Fleridan's pouch and left him tied to that tree, fleeing for my life across the lands". Well, it's pretty obvious that you may want to keep an eye out for Fleridan in the village from time to time. We've assembled a list of a few points to consider when writing your character history. As an incentive, writing a character history gives you an extra point to spend on your new character. Also, remember that Legends characters develop and grow with time and experience -- very few starting characters are all-powerful wizards or Dark Elf hunters; if that's what you want, it's possible, but you'll have your work cut out for you.
  4. Now that you're in the database as a player, and you have a character in mind, enter your new character in the database, including assigning points. A copy of the rulebook (pdf) will be handy for this step. Once you've entered yourself in the database, there there will be a link: "Create a Character".
  5. Lastly, register for an upcoming event. You can do this using our online registration system (using Visa or MasterCard), or you can send us a check. Information on how to do this is on your player page, which is created in step one above. This is also a good time to look at the Legends Player Waiver.
